Ashley Wagner was conceived on the 16th of May, 1992 in Heidelberg, Germany. As a teenager, in her early years, Ashley found herself hanging around with other girls of a different age, which impacted her self-esteem as she saw them appear more mature and in her mind, prettier than she. Ashley describes herself as a "hot mess" when she was a teen. Ashley's mom enrolled her in modeling classes to improve her confidence, and Ashley was able to begin thinking about becoming a model as a career. After she was told she couldn't be an effective model due to her height, Ashley thought about becoming an attorney and pursuing a degree in psychology.
